Head coach of 5 Olympic swimming teams, Bill Sweetenham, returned to Mt Isa to help run a swim clinic at Splashez Aquatic Centre.

On 28-29 October 2011, Mount Isa was humbled by the return of their most famous sporting identity – Bill Sweetenham. Over the duration of the weekend, a world-class swim clinic took place, organised by Brian and Bernadette Rodriquez (facility managers of Lane 4 Aquatics Mount Isa) at the Splashez Aquatic Centre. A number of clubs from regional QLD were invited to attend the event, including Mt Isa, Cloncurry, Julia Creek, Boulia, Richmond, Winton and Longreach.

The weekend proved to be a great success, with over 150 swimmers participating in the clinic, totally a massive 16 hours of swimming. The swimmers were in for a treat, with Bill covering all four strokes, starts and turns, along with information sessions for the athletes and their parents. The clinic participates, who were generally aged between 10-12, had great opportunities to improve their skills, through a number of different drills and stroke sessions. While the weekend proved to be challenging, every athlete walked away with a wealth of knowledge and skills, extremely honoured that they had learnt from the best.

Bill Sweetenham told stories of his swimming career, and how he made the most of all opportunities that came his way. Recognised for his strategic planning capabilities in high performance sport, Bill was a true inspiration to all of the athletes that weekend, and it won’t be long until more great swimmers emerge from Mount Isa. The swim clinic was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and such a great experience for regional youth.
