On Sun 25th March 2012, the Far West QLD swimming championships took place, being the first event of its kind in the region. The event was a great opportunity for swimming families who live in rural QLD, with participating clubs including Mt Isa, Cloncurry, Richmond, Hughenden, Julia Creek, Boulia, Winton, Longreach and Normanton.

The championship encompassed clubs from 3 separate regional swimming associations, including North QLD, Far North QLD and Central QLD. It was held in conjunction with North QLD swimming, who officiated the event, ensuring it was an official qualifying meet.

Mount Isa were definitely the stars of the day, taking great pride in winning every relay race, and also taking out the overall club champion’s trophy and overall champion team coach trophy. Along with these impressive achievements, Mount Isa also won 5 out of 6 age champion trophies. Mount Isa’s newest local State Member, Mr. Robbie Katter, also attended the event, presenting awards to the day’s achievers. Being such a great success, the championships will now become an annual event, providing much-need opportunities for regional QLD swimmers.
