Welcome U/16 Stockton Sharks to the pool

Lane 4 Stockton welcomes our first local team, the Stockton Sharks u/16’s to our pool for their weekly water session this pre-season. Stockton Sharks are a Junior Rugby League club based in Newcastle and their coach Laurie has been putting them through their paces with both dry and wet workouts at the Stockton Venue.

A group of 25 swimmers record the number of laps they swim at Stockton pool each day during the swimming season. As at the end of January they have swum between them a very credible 36,880 laps or a total of 1,844km. That would get us between Mackay and Townsville. Well done guys!

Nowhere else can you enjoy some good old fashion family fun in a country pool atmosphere, than at Lane 4 Stockton. Watch the ships pass by, hear the Fort Scatchley cannon every day at noon and if you're really lucky you can experience a "fly over" from one of the many planes from the air base at Williamstown.

The first bit of a swim is my favourite: the glide. I put my shoulders under and ready myself, lift my feet behind me to connect with the wall and push off, arms arrowed ahead and body ... for a few seconds ... suspended. Even in the thinking, I can feel the wall under my foot, really trying to get this bit right because it's so satisfying, a good glide. In my mind I'm a line, aerodynamic and forceful. Then engage. Pull the first arm back, kick a foot, start the clockwork, head still down before the first breath is needed.

I've written around the subject of swimming without talking much about the doing of it, perhaps because writing is so at odds with what swimming is. But I like a challenge - I swim in cold water, of course I like a challenge - so I'm going to plunge in. Before that, let's stand at the side of the pool in our swimming costumes; it's as near naked in front of strangers as most of us will ever get. (I've taken advice and am saying no more.)
